fort canning park, singapore

fort canning park is an interesting option for teambuilding in singapore, due to its rich historical significance.

The Fort Canning Park is located at Fort Canning Hill, at the central part of singapore. during World War 2, the british used it as a millitary base as it overlooks the Singapore Town. today, many of the bunkers and command posts built can still be seen at the park.

historical significance

as far back at the 14th century, Fort Canning was known as Bukit Larangan, or "Forbidden Hill" as Sri Tri Buana, ruler of Temasek (ancient Singapore), used to reside there.

in 1822 Sir stamford raffles built his bungalow and started singapore's 1st botanical garden on the hill. it was also the residence of all governors who ruled singapore before the mid 19th century.

Around 1860, the British coverted the hilll to a fort due to its strategic positioin. it was also later used by the Japanese during world war 2 and later by local army as a millitary base.

other interesting places to explore at fort canning park include:

  • Spice garden - a replica of the original 19-ha botanical garden that Raffles established
  • Sally port - a small hidden passage that can be used as a secret entrace or exit
  • keramat - burial ground of Malay ancient leaders
  • 9-pound cannons - obsolete cannons used as decorations at the fort
  • cupolas - 2 interesting looking shelters that stand side by side near fort canning green
  • fort canning green - used to be an old burial ground for catholics and protestants who lived in singpaore, some of the tombstones are placed in the boundary wall for pulic viewing

a typical programme at fort canning park consists of half a day indoor teambuilding session at the legends at fort canning(at the park) or Ywca (across the park) and half a day out door "amazing race" style team building around the park to give participants a chance to explore the park.
